The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is an international agreement that protects the human rights of children under the age of 18. The UNCRC was ratified by the UN General Assembly in 1989 and on the 16th December 1991, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland formally agreed to make sure that every child in the UK has all the rights as listed in the convention. The Welsh Assembly Government has shown its commitment to the convention by adopting it as the basis for policy making for children and young people in Wales in 2004.

This video will give you a brief history of the UNCRC.
Article 42 of the convention states that Governments should make the convention known to all parents and children. In line with this article a key objective of the Welsh Assembly Government is to increase awareness of the UNCRC. The Welsh Assembly Government have developed a raising awareness toolkit to assist professionals with teaching children and young people about their rights. Get the toolkit by clicking below.

The Welsh Assembly Government believes that in order to improve the lives of children and young people in Wales it is essential to consult them on decisions that affect their lives, and view their opinions on how we as Government can create better working relationships with them.

The video to the right is an example of one of the consultations that took place when forming the Raising Awareness Toolkit with children and young people. The consultation helped to ensure that workshops to be delivered through the toolkit where young person friendly, whilst being an effective resource to both children and young people and practitioners to raise awareness of their rights under the UNCRC.
